Describe your home and hot-water use
Tell us about the current boiler and cylinder, bathrooms and how the home is used. A survey helps assess the appropriate system, controls and output.
A combi boiler, a system boiler with a hot-water cylinder and a regular boiler arrangement suit different circumstances. Available space and how many outlets are used together matter alongside the existing system. Keep the discussion focused on your household rather than choosing by boiler output alone.
Mention any planned extension, extra bathroom or change in how the home is used. Tell us where the boiler is now and whether you want it moved. Location changes can affect the scope and the work needed around the installation.

Be clear about the installation scope
Ask which boiler and controls are included, what pipework will change, how the flue and condensate will be handled and what system cleaning is proposed.
Compare the exact model and the complete installation, not just the headline price. Ask what controls are proposed, whether existing equipment is being retained and how the system condition will be assessed. A written scope helps explain differences between quotations.
Make sure the quote identifies disposal, any necessary pipework changes and what is excluded. If electrical work, structural work or decoration needs another trade, agree who arranges it and how it affects the timetable.
Agree the practical details
Confirm access, likely disruption, work by other trades, making good, handover records and the exact manufacturer warranty. The written quotation should identify these before you commit.
Ask about the expected period without heating and hot water, how the work area will be protected and what access is needed. Let the team know about anyone with additional needs so these can be considered before a date is agreed.
At handover, ask for a demonstration of the controls and the relevant commissioning, installation and warranty information. Confirm who handles any required registration and keep the final documents together for future servicing. Warranty length and conditions depend on the chosen product and installation.
Your quick checklist
- Current system and household hot-water needs
- Exact boiler model and controls in writing
- Flue, condensate, pipework and cleaning scope
- Disruption, access, disposal and making good
- Handover documents and warranty conditions
A survey turns an idea into a clear quotation
Start with the property address, photographs if available and what you want to improve. A survey allows the installation requirements to be assessed before a final recommendation and price are agreed. Avoid treating an outline conversation as the finished specification.
