At a glance

  • Check the heating schedule and normal user controls.
  • Explain whether one radiator or the whole system is affected.
  • A cold area can suggest a cause, but is not a diagnosis.

Check the settings you normally use

Start with the room thermostat, programmer and ordinary radiator controls. Is the heating scheduled to run now? Has a holiday setting been left on, or has someone changed a room setting? Use the instructions for your own controls and give the heating its normal time to respond before describing the result.

Think about when the problem began. A single room that has always been slow to warm is a different enquiry from every radiator becoming cold today. Mention recent decorating, furniture changes or work on the system, even if you are unsure whether it is connected.

Describe the pattern clearly

Air can be one explanation for a radiator that stays cold at the top. Deposits can be one explanation for a cold lower area. Neither pattern is enough to confirm the cause remotely. Avoid buying a cleaning treatment or arranging a replacement solely because an online diagram looks familiar.

Note the affected rooms, whether the issue is constant and whether hot water still works. You do not need to keep touching hot radiators to compare them. A room-by-room list and a description of any unusual noise are useful starting points for the engineer.

Choose the next step

If your manufacturer provides radiator-bleeding guidance, follow it only when the heating is off and the radiator has cooled, and only if you are confident you can do so safely. The system may need a pressure check afterwards. If fittings are stuck, leaking or unfamiliar, arrange help instead of forcing them.

Balancing, control problems, circulation issues and system condition may need an engineer’s assessment. A power flush is not an automatic answer to every cold radiator. Ask what evidence supports the proposed work and what improvement it is intended to achieve before agreeing a quote.

Your quick checklist

  • Which rooms are affected
  • When the problem started
  • Whether hot water works
  • Recent work or changed controls
  • Any visible leaks or unusual sounds
