Start with the same job description
Give each contractor the same fitting list, photographs and description of the result you want. A like-for-like tap replacement cannot be compared fairly with a quote that includes new isolation valves and pipe alterations. For larger work, number the items and keep drawings on the same revision.
Separate fixed work from investigation
Ask whether the price is fixed for a defined task or covers time spent investigating a fault. Establish any minimum charge, travel arrangement, VAT treatment and when the contractor will seek approval for further work. An estimate based on photographs may need revision once access and condition are known.
Check product and finishing details
Record the make and model of significant fittings and who supplies them. Confirm removal and disposal arrangements, access openings and who reinstates walls, floors or tiling. Lower prices can reflect a smaller scope, so read exclusions before making the decision.
Agree changes and the handover
Name the person who can authorise changes and ask how costs will be confirmed. Keep the accepted quote, job notes and product records together. A clear scope gives both you and the contractor a practical reference if a question arises later.
