Make the handover count
Before the engineer leaves, ask for a demonstration of the normal heating and hot-water controls. Try the everyday adjustments yourself if practical, and ask how to restore a normal schedule. Make sure anyone else who uses the heating can find the instructions without relying on one person’s phone.
Ask which commissioning, installation and registration documents you should receive, who supplies them and when. Record the exact model, installation date and contact details. Keep a note of anything agreed for follow-up so that both you and the office understand the outstanding action.
Understand the manufacturer’s conditions
Guarantee length and eligibility vary by product and installation. Check the actual documents instead of relying on a number in an advertisement. Registration, maintenance and service records can be conditions of cover. For example, Worcester Bosch’s published terms include annual servicing and recording the service details.
A manufacturer’s guarantee and a separate service plan have different terms. Check what each covers, who you should contact and whether any work needs authorisation before another engineer attends. Do not assume radiators, external pipework, routine maintenance or every type of fault are included.
Prepare for future servicing and support
Set a reminder to arrange servicing according to the appliance instructions and applicable guarantee terms. Keep each completed record with the installation documents. If you move home or take over a property, locate the records early and ask the manufacturer about any applicable ownership arrangements.
If a fault develops, note the visible message and symptoms without opening the casing. Have the model, installation date and relevant reference ready when contacting support. Ask the office or manufacturer to clarify the correct route before accepting charges you expect another agreement to cover.
